Nationalism (part 2)
There is another important angle to nationalism that was left untouched in the first part. The angle of politics.
The rise of the whole narrative and fuss around nationalism is because of the “Divide and Rule” policy of Indian political parties. Divide and rule was first used by the British to colonize India and sadly today Indian policy parties are using the same method to win elections.
Nationalism as a concept and word was never as prominent as it’s been in the past 4 years. The years of BJP rule. Also, the 4 years have been amazing for the BJP (not much for the nation).
If you can make the relation here, you would realise that the success of BJP was backed by a strong hindutva narrative. A sheer evidence of divide and rule.
Mind you, I’m not saying that Congress does not use the same method. But it’s just that BJP has been able to pull it off better.
Congress always carried a vague ideology around the issue of religion and this may well be the 2nd biggest reason for their failure (Rahul Gandhi being the 1st).
The whole JNU incident, beef ban, “Mandir Vahin Bnega” were part of instilling the Hindu nationalist sentiment among the voters of this country.
2019 is just round the corner and some more such incidents are coming our way. But let’s keep our eyes open this time and not be swayed by the fake “nationalist” drama happening all around us.
